Alverca was the seat of a medieval municipality that was abolished in 1855. It belonged to the Chapels of King Afonso IV. Although it was a municipality without a charter, there are three letters of confirmation: that of Pedro I confirming the privileges of the municipality on August 24, 1357; the letter dated April 19, 1434, from Duarte, confirming the privileges and good customs and another issued on April 23, 1439, in which Afonso V confirms to the town of Alverca all the privileges, graces and bounties. The small municipality was made up of the parishes of Alverca, Sobralinho and Santa Iria de Azóia. It was elevated to a city on August 9, 1990. It was the first town to be elevated to city status without being the seat of a municipality. Alverca is more populous than Vila Franca de Xira. It currently disputes the parish of Vila Franca de Xira's ownership of the Lombo do Tejo mouchão.
Alverca is called the "green city" (due to the large number of green spaces and tree-lined streets). It is a major rail and car crossing point. The city's main attractions are the Air Museum, the Municipal Museum - Núcleo de Alverca, the Manueline pillory in Largo João Mantas in the center of Alverca, the Church of São Pedro, the old Misericórdia and the Church of the Shepherds, which houses the second largest carillon in Europe and the third largest in the world. Also noteworthy is the Álvaro Vidal Garden, with views over the Tagus and the Lezíria, rare in the Greater Lisbon area.
One of Alverca's characteristics is its connection to the history of Portuguese aviation, being considered the cradle of aviation in Portugal. The military aerodrome and the General Aeronautical Material Workshops were set up there in 1919. Alverca was also home to Portugal's first international airport, called Campo Internacional de Aterragem (International Landing Field), which served Lisbon until the inauguration of Portela Airport in 1940.
